2014 Chris Thater Memorial Adds Youth Duathlon

Event features a run-bike-run event on the same course used by the pro riders

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County STOP-DWI Program today announced that for the first time, the Chris Thater Memorial Races presented by SEFCU will feature a Youth Duathlon. Organized by the Broome County Triathlon Club, the duathlon will take place on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014 in downtown Binghamton.

The event consists of young athletes running around the same .66-mile course used for the 2014 cycling races, then transitioning to their bikes to ride 2 or 4 laps based on their age group, followed by a final run of .66-miles. The event is broken down by age groups including a 7 to 10 year old division and an 11 to 13 year old division. The event is not timed but a running clock will be available if parents wish to record their child’s time.

Parents can visit www.ThaterMemorial.com to navigate to the registration page for event details. The Youth Duathlon is a USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event and participants must be USAT members or hold a one-day license which will be available upon registration. Registration costs $5 for USAT members and $15 for non-members (includes the $10 one-day license). Youth shirts are available for $6.

Prior to participating in the Youth Duathlon, the athletes will be required to complete a Cycling Skills Clinic presented by the Broome County Traffic Safety Program. Cyclists will learn how to properly wear a helmet, ensure their bikes are safe to ride, and navigate through several obstacles to learn the do’s and don’ts of cycling safety. The Skills Clinic is free of charge and open to the public. Participants must come with a bike and wear a helmet.

Registration and packet pickup begins at 10:45AM and is followed by the Cycling Skills Clinic at 11:45AM and the Duathlon at 12:45PM. All events will take place in the MetroCenter parking lot which will be closed to traffic. Free parking will be available at all downtown parking ramps.
