Broome County to host Teen Traffic Safety Day

Event draws 600 students for a full day of interactive traffic safety education

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County Traffic Safety Program and STOP-DWI Program will host Teen Traffic Safety Day on Thursday, October 16th at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Sponsored by State Farm, the event will consist of a full day of fun and educational traffic safety activities.

A total of 16 schools will be participating including two districts outside of Broome County. Parents, school staff and administration are also welcomed to attend.

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death among adolescents. In an effort to reduce the number of teens injured or killed in Broome County by these crashes, this event will raise awareness about impaired driving, distracted driving and safety belt use.
 
Students will have an opportunity to participate in a Battle of the Belts Competition, experience safety belt demonstrations by the NYS Police, take part in texting simulations provided by AT&T’s It Can Wait Campaign, experience a motorcycle simulator provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and learn about the effects that drugs and alcohol can have on driving by attempting to complete simple tasks while wearing Fatal Vision Goggles. United Health Services’ Let’s Not Meet by Accident presentation will focus on what happens after a crash, the rescue process, medical care of the victims and the possible trauma and lifelong injuries on the body   In addition, schools will be able to register for Celebrate My Drive® with State Farm Agent Mark Anderson for a chance to win up to $100,000.
 
The event will end with a presentation by Joe McCormack, Chief of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Mr. McCormack has been designated as the New York State Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor by the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
