Helpful Hints re Official Documents Required by the DMV

HELPFUL HINTS REGARDING
DMV REQUIREMENTS FOR BIRTH CERTIFICATES,
SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS AND OTHER OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS
Binghamton, NY. – Rick Blythe, County Clerk, states that “many of our customers are coming to our Broome County DMV Offices with mutilated official documents such as birth certificates, social security cards and other official documents. If your document has at any time been in more than one piece and taped, is dog-eared, faded, smudged or damaged so that it is not legible or any of the security features are damaged in any way, we are required to ask you to provide a new document.” These directives and guidelines are established by New York State as well as Homeland Security.
In order to avoid the frustration of making a trip to the DMV only to be sent out to acquire these replacement documents, please take the time to determine the condition of your documents. If anything is questionable, you are more than welcome to bring them in for our inspection. If you know you will need new documents, here are some sites that may be helpful to you. A new birth certificate can be obtained from the municipality in which you were born. If you go to www.usimmigrationsupport.org/birth_certificate.html, there is a guide available to you. A duplicate social security card application form is available through www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf.
“I hope this will clarify some of the confusion with regard to document requirements,” says Rick, “and that by being made aware of this information, it will enable you to successfully complete your DMV business with us.”
