Special Events

2011 Riverbank Clean-Up:

CANCELLED
Unfortunately, the 2011 Riverbank Clean-Up has been cancelled. The safety of our volunteers is of the utmost importance to us, and the scheduled date for the event does not afford enough time to identify and prepare for potential new safety hazards along the riverbank due to recent flooding events. See the Riverbank Clean-Up page of our website for more information about alternative volunteer opportunities.

Joyce K.L. Smith Environmental Photography Competition:

Thank you to all who participated. Check back early in 2012 for more details about next year's competition. Visit our Photo Show page to view past winners and more information.

Citizens Shaping Environmental Policy

The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is a citizen advisory group to County government on local environmental matters. Our mission is to provide support and advice to the County Executive, Legislature, municipal bodies and citizens; conduct environmental research activities; raise public awareness through education; investigate sound methods of ecological planning for the County’s natural resources;  review environmental assessments, plans and reports; and to respond to other environmental concerns as they arise.

Public Programs

Joyce K.L. Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition
The EMC is sponsoring its fifteenth show and competition as a celebration of its work to protect and enhance Broome County's environment. It is named in memory of Joyce K. L. Smith, a former member of the EMC and local leader and community activist for the environment. The purpose of the show is to portray all aspects of Broome County's cultural and natural surroundings. Entries are due on March 16th. An opening reception will be held at the Broome County Public Library May 11, 2011 and winning photographs will be displayed through July 31, 2010. For more details visit the Photo Show page.

EMC Riverbank Clean-Up Information

On October 2nd, 211 volunteers collected 1.26 tons of debris and trash at locations along the banks of area’s rivers and tributaries. Once again, the event was organized in combination with Ocean Conservancy and the American Littoral Society (ALS). The next clean-up is planned for Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9am until noon, rain or shine.  Pre-registration is required. Registration details are not yet available. Continue to check the EMC website or contact the EMC office for further details as they become available.
