Greater Binghamton Airport Receives $3.8 Million Federal Grant

(Binghamton, NY) The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) a $3.8 million grant under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The grant will be used to rehabilitate the airport’s main apron.

New blacktop and concrete will replace deteriorating pavement surfaces found on the main apron, which is the primary parking area for the airlines serving BGM. The overall area will be enhanced by an energy efficient lighting system along with new signage and pavement markings. Construction activities are slated to begin later this summer. The project is another undertaking to ensure safe and efficient air transportation services to and from the Greater Binghamton Area.

“This grant will benefit the local economy,” said Barbara J. Fiala, Broome County Executive. “With it come improvements to the facility and business opportunities for local contractors since many of the airport’s federally funded projects are awarded to contractors in the community.”

This project constitutes the first phase of the airport’s Airfield Enhancement Program. Included in the program is the installation of a geothermal heating system. It is a prototype designed by a group of students from Binghamton University in collaboration with the Greater Binghamton Airport and McFarland-Johnson, Inc. The main apron is used by all of the air carriers serving BGM and airport officials expect that completion of the Airfield Enhancement Program will make the airport an even more attractive place for the airlines to do business.

“After receiving a sizeable air service development grant in March, the Federal government is again showing its support of BGM,” said Carl R. Beardsley Jr., Broome County's Commissioner of Aviation. “These new capital improvements will enhance safety and overall customer satisfaction.”

The Greater Binghamton Airport is currently served by Delta Connection, US Airways Express, and United Express. Nonstop commercial service is provided to Philadelphia, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.
