Chairman Marinich Statement on the County Executive's Veto of Bi-Partisan Redistricting Plan

"I'm deeply disappointed that County Executive Brennan vetoed the bi-partisan redistricting plan that was recommended by the Ad Hoc Committee on Redistricting and passed by the Legislature on June 16.
The Ad Hoc Committee was made up of Democrats, Republicans, a representative of the League of Women Voters and members of the public.
The Ad Hoc Committee, which met publicly six times between February and April and was open to input from all Legislators, put forward a fair plan that created a Republican Primary, a Democrat Primary and two head-to-head races.
Eight out of nine members of the Ad Hoc Committee voted for the recommended plan including Democrat Minority Leader Mark Whalen, Democrat Legislator Dan D. Reynolds and the representative of the League of Women Voters.
Unfortunately, two Democrats who participated in the Ad Hoc Committee, had an active role in the recommended plan and voted for the plan in the Ad Hoc Committee, changed their mind and voted along their party lines when it came to the Floor of the Legislature for a vote.
Now the County Executive is siding with those Democrat Legislators who want to overturn the bi-partisan plan in order to gerrymander districts in their favor. That is unacceptable.
The public wants County Government to focus on cutting taxes, creating jobs and providing efficient services."
