The Chris Thater Memorial Is Recognized As One Of North America's Top 24 Events

(Binghamton, NY) The Chris Thater Memorial was named as one of North America’s top 24 events by Velo-News: The Journal of Competitive Cycling (May, 2010 edition), the leading journal of competitive cycling in North America.
The Velo-News list includes the marquee events on America’s International (UCI) Calendar, National Racing Calendar, USA Cycling Pro Tour and USA Crits Series. Three events from New York State were recognized on Velo-News Top 24 list: The Tour of New York (Rochester area), the Tour of Battenkill (Albany area) and Greater Binghamton’s own Chris Thater Memorial.
“I am proud that the Chris Thater Memorial has become such a highly recognized event. This attention helps Broome County promote the STOP-DWI message while helping to showcase our community at the national level. The event, which pays tribute to Chris Thater, has certainly turned a tragedy into something positive for Chris’ family and Greater Binghamton” said Jim May, Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator.
The Chris Thater Memorial, now in its 27th year, is a member of the National Racing Calendar (NRC) and the USA Crits Series. The National Racing Calendar (NRC) includes 27 events across the United States and is the premier season-long domestic road cycling series sanctioned by USA Cycling – the national governing body for the sport. USA Crits is a national series that features America’s top criteriums. The 2010 USA Crits Series includes nine events located in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Grafton (WI), Boise, Charlotte, Dallas, Washington, DC and Binghamton.
The 27th Annual Chris Thater Memorial will be held August 28-29, 2010 at Recreation Park in Binghamton, NY. The event is a project of Broome County’s STOP-DWI Program and serves to heighten awareness about the drunk driving problem. The event is dedicated in memory of Chris Thater, an avid cyclist, who was killed by a drunk driver. The Chris Thater Memorial includes a national class 5K Run, cycling events, a music festival and expo, and concessions. The event is free to the public.
