At about 7:00 AM on September 12, 2011 the residents of the Twin Orchard development are returning to their residences. Even though the water system has maintained positive pressure and no harmful bacteria has been found throughout the flooding event, many service leaks and possible main breaks are being identified in the effected area along with the failure of the Town of Vestal’s wastewater removal process caused by the flood.
DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills most bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. The symptoms above are not caused just by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
What is being done?
The town is working to fix any leaks identified with the water system and restoring its wastewater removal process as quickly as possible. You will be informed when tests confirm that no harmful bacteria are in the system and you no longer need to boil your water. It is anticipated that the problem will be resolved within 5 days.
For more information, please contact Scott Groats of the Town of Vestal at 748-6683 or the Broome County Health Department at 778-2887.
