Broome County Welcomes Walker On 3,200 Mile Coast-to-Coast Journey To Raise Awareness For Meals on Wheels

(ENDICOTT, NY) -- Broome County Executive Debbie Preston today welcomed Vestal native Phil Cihiwsky back to Broome County, as he wraps up up a 3,200 walk from San Diego, California to York Harbor, Maine, to raise funds and awareness for Meals on Wheels.

“In Broome County last year our Meals on Wheels programs delivered over 275,000 meals to our seniors; without Meals on Wheels our seniors wouldn’t have this essential home delivery of food, visits from volunteers and friendships that are critical to their physical and mental health,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “We are incredibly proud and grateful of Phil Cihiwsky for dedicating seven months of his life to this cause, and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.”

Cihiwsky began his journey on March 4th, 2013, in San Diego, California and will wrap up his 3,200 mile walk across the country next month in York Harbor, Maine.  Along the way he is making stops to promote Meals on Wheels, raise funds for programs, and visit with clients.

“The human spirit is all about helping those who are in need; this journey is a natural fit for me," said Cihiwsky. "There are many seniors who are isolated to their homes; a meal twice a day and the companionship of volunteers are very important. These are the people I’m walking for.”

Cihiwsky pushes a cart along the way, containing a tent and other essentials.  He has experienced many struggles throughout his journey including storms, heat and fatigue.

He has averaged approximately 19 miles per day throughout his seven month journey through 15 States and anticipates reaching the east coast next month.

Preston proclaimed September 5th, 2013, to be Phil Cihiwsky Day in Broome County, in recognition of his tireless efforts and extraordinary dedication to senior causes and the Meals on Wheels programs.

The two Meals on Wheels Programs in Broome County serve over 600 clients annually with a dedicated team of 110 volunteers.  Volunteers are always in need and donations are always accepted, for more information contact:
