Fiala Supports Grocery Store Effort for Binghamton’s North Side

Executive earmarking economic development funds towards the project

(Binghamton, NY) Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala says she is earmarking $40,000 in local economic development/brownfield redevelopment funds to assist City of Binghamton officials in their attempt to locate a grocery store on Binghamton’s North Side.

Efforts have been underway for years to try to attract a grocery store chain to the neighborhood located near the Binghamton Plaza. The area has been without a full service grocery store since 1996.

“City officials have been talking to my administration about the potential grocery store project and I wholeheartedly support their efforts,” said Executive Fiala. “I think if we set aside $40,000 in economic development funds this might help move this project to the next level.”

The $40,000 can be used for site preparation and or environmental review.

Fiala says the store will have an immediate economic impact on the neighborhood and could have an extended impact depending on the grocery store chain that ends up locating in the area.

The funds which will have to be approved by the Broome County legislature will come from the 2% hotel/motel occupancy tax funds which have been earmarked by the county for economic development, marketing and brownfield redevelopment initiatives.
