Preston Announces Changes in County Executive Office

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston outlined changes she’s making in the Broome County Executive Office.

The main change Preston announced is the decision to not fill the vacant Deputy County Executive position, which will save taxpayers nearly $100,000 in salary and benefits a year.

“In these tough economic times, I have decided to not fill the position,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “I don’t think it’s right to fill that position when I’m asking all of our departments to cut back and look for ways to save money for the County taxpayers.”

The position was vacated in May.

Preston says she will divide up the responsibilities of that position to others currently in the County.

Under her plan, Commissioner of Social Service Art Johnson has agreed to oversee the Office for Aging as well as the Willow Point Nursing Home.

Commissioner of Public Works Dan Schofield has agreed to oversee the departments of Aviation and the B.C. Transit.

“Art Johnson has a phenomenal understanding of human service issues and will be able to oversee the new departments without skipping a beat,” says Preston.  “Dan Schofield has a great understanding of County Government and will be able to take over the two departments that deal with transportation issues.”

Both Johnson and Schofield will assume their new responsibilities tomorrow.

Preston says as the County continues to go through the budget process, the new structure will be evaluated and there may be even more changes coming for 2015.
