Public Health Emergency Order for
Some Areas Twin Orchards

(VESTAL, NY) – The failure of three sewage lift stations in the Twin Orchards area of Vestal is causing sewage to back up into residential basements. Two of the three lift stations have been repaired. The third lift station is still under water and is not accessible for repair. Until the third lift station is repaired, sewage will continue to flow into the residential basements. Therefore, Broome County Health Department officials are prohibiting residents from entering the Twin Orchards area of First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Valley Road, Oak Street, Birch Street, Pearl Street (from Route 17 off ramp west to Vestal Road), Vestal Road (from Route 17 overpass to East Birch Street) as of 11:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2011 until further notice.

Most illnesses that arise from contact with sewage are caused by pathogens, which are biological agents that cause disease or illness in a host. The most common pathogens in sewage are bacteria, parasites, and viruses. They cause a wide variety of acute illnesses including diarrhea and infections. These illnesses can be violent and unpleasant, but mostly pass after several days or weeks with no lasting effects. In some cases, however, pathogens can cause serious long-term illnesses or even death. Certain groups such as children, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system are particularly vulnerable to these long-term effects.
