Strong Thunderstorms Cause Power Outages Broome County Emergency Operations Center Activated

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County Office of Emergency Services opened the Emergency Operations Center after a series of strong thunderstorms moved throughout the region this evening. Power outages caused by fallen trees and strong winds have been reported in the City of Binghamton, Town of Binghamton, Port Dickinson, Windsor, Chenango, Fenton and Colesville. Several roadways are closed throughout the county due to downed tree limbs and other debris. Motorists are urged to obey detours and not travel down roads which have been closed by authorities.

“Local police and fire agencies have been working diligently to close down roads which have become impassable due to downed power lines and tree limbs,” stated Brett Chellis, Director of Emergency Services and Fire Coordinator.

Local utility companies are working to restore power to areas affected by the storms. Approximately 1,300 NYSEG customers are without power according to information provided by the utility company online at:  http://www.nyseg.com/Outages/outageinformation.html.

Alternative light sources such as candles and oil lamps should be monitored to avoid accidental ignition.
