Effect of Plea on Your License

Keep in mind that a plea to a speed violation or a lesser infraction will mean  points on your license, and may lead to insurance consequences.  Since every insurance carrier is different, you may want to review your particular policy before pleading guilty.  A dismissal of your ticket(s) by completing the Traffic Diversion Program will mean no points and no insurance consequences.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a separate and independent agency and will assess "points" to your license upon your conviction for certain traffic infractions.  Based on the number of points assessed to your license, the DMV determines if your privilege to drive is valid, or suspended or revoked.

For purposes of evaluating the consequences of a plea to a traffic infraction on your license, please review the Point Assessment Chart.

Please also note, if you accumulate six or more points on your drivers license, you may be subject to a mandatory drivers responsibility assessment fee by the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Please see http://dmv.ny.gov/ for further information.
