Storm Leaves Path of Destruction in its Wake

(Binghamton, NY) Broome County and its municipalities are tallying the damage that resulted from Thursday's slow moving storm system. A low pressure system that combined with the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole traveled through Broome County and much of New York State beginning Thursday morning and continued into Friday morning. The heaviest rain fell Thursday evening and in the early morning hours of Friday. The storm system moved on to New England but not before it caused quite a bit of damage to area roads.

Some roads remain closed or with limited access because of the damage caused by the rain, runoff, flash flooding and river flooding conditions in and around Broome County. Here is a preliminary list of roads still impacted by the severe weather.

  • Tiona Rd. between Bailey Hollow Rd. and Ashley Rd. in the Town of Maine, where a culvert pipe has washed out, and is inaccessible until the water recedes. This road has the potential to be closed for up to one week.
  • Popple Hill Rd. near Route 79 in the Town of Lisle. Completely closed at one point, one lane is now open to alternating traffic. This condition may persist for up to one week, as repairs are made.
  • Upper Lisle Rd. (CR-152), and the seasonal portion of Keibel Rd, both in the Town of Triangle, are both closed due to high water level in the Whitney Point Reservoir. These are normally closed during high water conditions.

Even though the system has moved east and the rain has ended, some flooding potential remains with the main stem rivers in certain areas. However, National Weather Service representatives and Broome County Emergency Services Personnel believe the river flooding that will occur will be nominal across most of Broome County. Some areas near the Broome County/Cortland County border are still being watched closely with minor and moderate river flooding possible.
The following are the official NWS forecasts for the major river gauging points relevant to Broome County as of 3pm Friday, October 1st:

  • Susquehanna at Windsor – Currently 10.48 ft. Flood stage is 17 ft. Crest forecast at 14.3 ft Sat. afternoon.
  • Susquehanna at Conklin – Currently 8.66 ft. Flood stage is 12 ft. Crest is forecast at 12.4 ft Sat. night.
  • Susquehanna at Vestal – Currently 15.53 ft. Flood stage is 18 ft. Crest is forecast at 19.1 ft Sat. night.
  • Chenango at Chenango Forks – Currently 9.93 ft. Flood stage is 10 ft. Crest is forecast at 10 ft. tonight.
  • Delaware at Hale Eddy – Currently 6.3 ft. Flood stage is 11 ft. Crested at 8.15 ft. this morning.
  • Tioughnioga at Cortland – Currently 11.3 ft. Flood stage is 8 ft. Crest is forecast at 11.3 ft currently.

The Red Cross opened a shelter last night in Lisle to assist a handful of families that had to be evacuated from their homes. Media is urged to contact the Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter, for the status of that shelter.
While Broome EMS is receiving damage reports from across the county, we do not have a total amount at this time.
