Greater Binghamton Airport Has Strong 2nd Quarter

Double Digit Growth during the 2nd Quarter of 2010

(Binghamton, NY) A growth trend involving airline passenger activity at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) continued for the 2nd consecutive quarter. During the 2nd quarter of 2010, 28,611 passengers utilized BGM which represents an increase of 15.2% over the same period in 2009. In June of 2010 alone, passenger boardings increased by 16.4% over June of 2009, which is the largest monthly percentage increase at BGM in nearly three (3) years.
Of note, the world’s largest airline, Delta Air Lines, with their newly expanded schedule between BGM and Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), reached an incredible 66.9% increase in the 2nd quarter of 2010. Almost 10,000 passengers utilized Delta during the 2nd quarter, which is nearly 4,000 more than had during the same period in 2009.   Delta Air Lines added a third round trip between BGM and DTW in April of 2010.
“We are seeing some very positive signs with respect to passenger boarding activity at the Greater Binghamton Airport,” said Barbara J. Fiala, Broome County Executive. “Clearly, an expanded airline schedule has been a factor in stimulating the number of travelers choosing BGM for their air travel needs,” added Fiala.
In addition to Delta Air Lines’ expanded flight schedule, a variety of factors have influenced this trend including what appears to be growth in the volume of business-related travel resulting from local economic improvements such as natural gas exploration. Secondly, the impacts of a resurgence in vacation travel that appears to be occurring locally has resulted in higher levels of vacationers using the Greater Binghamton Airport. In the end, a nearly equal combination of vacation and business travel appears to be playing a role in BGM’s growing passenger levels.
“We are pleased that the travelers of our region are responding so well to our flight options that includes service to three of the largest and most useful hub airports in the country,” said Carl R. Beardsley, Jr., Broome County Commissioner of Aviation. “In addition to the flight options, our customer satisfaction surveys are indicating that our travelers truly appreciate the ease of use BGM has to offer. This quarter’s numbers confirm the accuracy of their comments,” added Beardsley.
