Broome County Health Department Announces 2011-2012 Flu Clinic Schedule

Fight the Flu

(BINGHAMTON, NY) – The Broome County Health Department (BCHD) will begin its series of annual flu clinics on Monday, October 17, 2011.   Additional clinics will be offered through the end of December 2011. The vaccine provides protection against seasonal influenza and will be available in the flu shot form only. The nasal flu mist is not available at these clinics.

“The best way to protect yourself and others from getting the flu is to get immunized annually,” said Claudia Edwards, Public Health Director for the Broome County Health Department. “Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older; however, people who are severely allergic to eggs or egg products and infants younger than 6 months of age should not get the vaccine.”

The clinics are open to anyone ages three and up. The fee for the flu vaccine is $25 (cash or check only). If you are 65 years of age or older and subscribe to traditional Medicare Part B, Excellus Medicare Blue PPO, Today’s Options or CDPHP Medicare the health department will bill your insurance plan. Pneumonia shots will also be offered at the flu clinics for Medicare Part B recipients age 65 and older.

If your children’s immunizations are covered by medical insurance, parents are advised to seek flu shots for them at their regular medical provider. This can help cut down on out of pocket costs, especially for children who require a second dose of the vaccine because of their age. Children 6 months through 8 years of age who did not receive at least one dose of the 2010-2011 vaccine, or whom it is not certain whether the 2010-2011 was received, should receive 2 doses of the 2011-2012 seasonal vaccine.

If your children do not have a medical provider or if their immunizations are not covered by insurance, call the Broome County Health Department at 778-2839 to schedule an appointment for your children’s flu immunizations. The health department offers immunizations for children at low or no cost.

Residents can call the Broome County Health Department Influenza Line at 778-3911, Option 2, to hear a recording of the current clinic schedule or log onto the Broome County Health Department website at www.gobroomecounty.com/hd/flu.
