Community Recognition Event Honored Progress in Tobacco Control

BINGHAMTON, NY – A Recognition Event entitled “A Decade of Progress” was held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Binghamton State Office Building on Friday, March 12, 2010. The event was sponsored by Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga, Tobacco Free Healthy Schools, Reality Check of Broome and Tioga Counties and Team Act Cessation Center. Over 100 Broome County and Tioga County agencies, businesses, schools, municipalities, and health care providers were honored for their contributions in making Broome and Tioga counties healthier places to live by adopting policies that help to “denormalize” tobacco use. Attendees included Mayor Matt Ryan, and Broome County Legislators Suzanne Messina and Matthew Pasquale.

“We would like to say thank you and hold these organizations and individuals up as models for other organizations in our community,” said Sharon Fischer, Coordinator for Tobacco Free Broome. “Their efforts are important as we work to reduce the number of youth who initiate smoking and to change the social norms around smoking.”

“These honorees have taken steps to decrease or eliminate smoking by either establishing smoke free outdoor areas, refusing to sell tobacco or reducing/removing tobacco advertising, enforcing ‘no smoking’ policies on school and work campuses, adopting smoke free apartments and implementing the clinical practice guidelines to help patients who smoke,” said Sharon Fischer, Coordinator for Tobacco Free Broome. Diana Chandler, Coordinator for Reality Check of Broome and Tioga Counties added, “There are many individuals in this community who would like to be a part of creating a new, healthier generation that will not be affected by the ravages of tobacco related illness and death.”

Claudia Edwards, Director, Broome County Health Department provided the opening remarks at the event and Hans Peters, Director, Tioga County Health Department provided the closing remarks. The tobacco control partners receive funding from the New York State Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program, which utilizes evidence-based strategies in preventing and reducing tobacco use and eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke.
