Health Department Announces Opening of Cooling Centers

Centers available to help people mitigate health risks posed by high temperatures
(Binghamton, N.Y.) The Broome County Health Department in partnership with the American Red Cross has announced the opening of “cooling stations” for people to manage their health during today’s high temperatures. The cooling centers will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the following locations:
St. Cyril & Method Church Hall, 148 Clinton Street, Binghamton, NY
BC Transit Route 7 Clinton (in front of the church)
Endwell Fire Station, lower level, 3508 Country Club Road (near Hooper Road)
BC Transit bus route 35-W Bus (Dunkin Donuts stop)
For those who are homebound because of wheelchair restrictions they should call the Broome County Health Department at 607.778.3940 so that special transportation arrangements can be made.
The cooling stations are open to people of all ages to avoid the heat and cool off. Water, ice, air conditioning and seating will be provided. These are short term “drop in” cooling stations and are provided for short term use. People should bring their own food, medication, and if needed, diapers, toys and activities to keep children occupied.
If you don't have air conditioning, spend some time in one of the following air conditioned senior centers, the mall, public library or at Wilson Hospital's cafeteria, at the Picciano Building, Baldwin Street entrance:

Additional tips to manage during hot weather:
- Take a cool shower or bath.
- Drink plenty of water unless you have specific directions otherwise from you doctor.
- Refrain from drinking liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar – these actually cause you to lose more body fluid.
- If you have air conditioning, stay inside where it is cool.
Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
