Health Officials Report Second Confirmed Case of H1N1

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Broome County Health Department has received notification from the Wadsworth State Laboratory in Albany of its second confirmed case of H1N1 (Swine) Flu. It is unknown how the individual contracted the virus, but they did have a recent travel history to downstate New York. The individual had mild symptoms and has recovered.
People who were in close contact with the individual have been notified and advised to stay at home if they start to experience influenza-like illness. No symptoms or evidence of disease has been noted.
“We anticipated that there would be more confirmed cases in our community and expect to see additional isolated cases in the upcoming weeks,” said Broome County Health Department Director Claudia Edwards. “The health department will continue monitoring the community for any clusters of cases. At this time, we have no evidence of increase in disease severity or associated hospitalizations,” she added.
The H1N1 (Swine) Flu is spread by coughing and sneezing; therefore, people with flu-like symptoms should practice the same hygiene measures they do during the normal flu season. Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough into your upper sleeve not your hands. Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing.
Anyone with flu symptoms should stay at home. If you feel you need medical attention, contact your medical provider to determine if emergency care is needed. Limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.
