Parents Encouraged to have Installation of Child Safety Seats Inspected

(BINGHAMTON – NY) Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under in New York State. Most parents believe they are using child safety seats properly, but it is estimated that four out of five children are improperly restrained.
Child safety seats can sometimes be difficult to install. Car seat and vehicle manuals/instructions can be confusing to parents and caregivers. And of course, the child passenger safety laws and guidelines are always changing. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), child safety seats are 71% effective in preventing injury for infants and 54% for toddlers, but only if they are installed correctly. If you’re not sure your car seat is safe or properly installed, it is a good idea to have a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician take a look at it.
Parents and caregivers can set up an appointment with a Certified Technician at one of the Broome County Child Passenger Safety Fitting Stations by calling Christine Muss at the Broome County Health Department at 607.778.2807. The fitting station provides FREE child safety seat inspections for families and caregivers as well as education and guidance on child passenger safety. Parents may also receive a FREE replacement child safety seat in the event their seat is expired, recalled or deemed unsafe.
Car seat inspections are conducted only at the locations, dates and times listed below:
