Point of Dispensing Exercise Tests Emergency Preparedness Plans, and Provides Free Seasonal Flu Vaccine

Seasonal Flu Vaccination

(BINGHAMTON, NY) - As a follow-up to Emergency Preparedness Month, the Broome County Health Department will be holding two POD (Point of Dispensing) exercises where FREE seasonal flu shots will be offered to residents 20 years and older.   The two PODS will take place Monday, October 1, 2012 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Broome County Health Department, 225 Front Street, Binghamton.

“It is critical that the health department be able to test the plans they have in place and to involve the community in emergency exercises so that people become familiar with the POD process and have confidence that they will be rapidly protected if a disease outbreak occurs,” said Claudia Edwards, Public Health Director for the Broome County Health Department.

“The health department had wonderful success during H1N1 delivering vaccine to the public,” said Debbie Preston, Broome County Executive. “It is important that they continue to test their response capabilities in a realistic way. This exercise provides that opportunity and also gives residents a chance to receive the seasonal flu vaccine at no cost.”

During this year’s exercise, the health department will be testing an online pre-registration to try increase throughput and maximize efficiency. Pre-registration will allow residents to complete medical screening questions and print out their registration form before attending the POD, which will decrease waiting times.

Residents interested in receiving a FREE seasonal flu shot can register online at www.health.state.ny.us/gotoclinic. Those without access to the internet are encouraged to go to the Broome County Public Library located at 185 Court Street, Binghamton, or Broome-Tioga Workforce New York located at 171 Front Street, Binghamton, to complete the online registration.   At either location, county employees can provide assistance with completing the form fields. Those registering online must print out their registration form and bring it with them to the POD.

Walk-ins are also welcome to attend the POD exercises, but may experience delays.
