BINGHAMTON, NY – The Broome County Health Department will be holding two H1N1 clinics during the week of November 23, 2009. The vaccine is available at no charge. Written consent from a parent or guardian will be required for anyone under 18 years of age.

Broome County Health Department to Hold Seasonal Flu Clinic

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Broome County Health Department has received the remainder of its seasonal flu vaccine and has scheduled a clinic for Monday, November 23, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The clinic will be held at the health department and is open to anyone 18 years and older. The fee for the flu vaccination is $20.

Broome and Tioga Counties Surplus Vehicles & Equipment Auction Returns $229,413.71 to Local Agencies

(Binghamton, NY) The 27^th Annual Broome and Tioga Counties Surplus Vehicles & Equipment Auction held at the end of September generated $229,413.71 for local agencies. Hundreds attended the auction held at the Broome County Highway Garage to bid on items such as: used vehicles, furniture, bicycles, lawn equipment, computers and more. In 2008, the auction generated $209,000 in revenue.

New York’s Child Restraint Law is Changing!

BINGHAMTON, NY – Effective Tuesday, November 24, 2009, all children must be in an appropriate child restraint in a motor vehicle until they reach their 8^th birthday. An appropriate child restraint is one that meets the child’s height and weight recommended by the manufacturer. Safety belts are not considered an appropriate child restraint unless the child is taller than 4’ 9”. Safety belts are designed for adults not children. Young children who are placed in vehicle belts rather than booster seats are 59% more likely to suffer devastating injuries, including damage to the brain, liver, spleen and spinal cord. A booster seat raises your child up so that the safety belt fits your child correctly and provides better protection.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Recognizes Local Leaders

City of Binghamton Police Officer Mike Senio and Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator James May

(Binghamton-NY) Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will be honoring two local leaders on November 17th at their annual luncheon highlighting their achievements in deterring individuals from driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator James May will be receiving an Individual Contribution Award for his work in developing the statewide STOP-DWI Crack Down Campaign which unified the efforts of County Sheriffs, State and Municipal Police. City of Binghamton Police Officer Michael Senio will be presented with an Individual Officer Award for his outstanding efforts in enforcing New York’s DWI laws.

Broome County Security Completes Welfare Fraud Sweep

Seeks to recover $50,846.69 in overpayments

(Binghamton, NY) Through their ongoing efforts, the Broome County Security Case Integrity Unit has identified illegally received welfare payments amounting to $50,846.69 in the month of October. As part of this investigation, Broome County Security has arrested and charged thirty two individuals with various violations of NYS penal law welfare fraud statutes. In 2008, the Case Integrity Unit identified and recovered nearly 6 million dollars through the fraud detection program lead by the County Security Division.
