Broome County Surpasses $1.1 Million in Prescription Savings with ProAct Rx Discount Cards

Broome County Surpasses $1.1 Million in Prescription Savings with ProAct Rx Discount Cards

(Binghamton, NY). 4th District Broome County Legislator Joe Sanfilippo today announced that Broome County residents have collectively saved over $1.1 Million at the pharmacy counter with a discount prescription drug program sponsored by Broome County Government in the fall of 2009. Over 42,000 prescriptions have been filled saving participants an average of 45% or $27.45 per script filled.

Broome County partnered with ProAct, Inc. to provide financial relief for residents who are uninsured or underinsured and needing to fill prescriptions. Participants can also use the discount cards to obtain discounts on vision, hearing and LASIK services. This program was made available through ProAct, Inc. at no cost to Broome County or participants. Anyone who doesn’t currently have a card is encouraged to visit the ProAct website and print their own card. (www.NYRxDiscountCard.com)

“We are very pleased with the utilization and savings we’ve seen thus far in Broome County,” said ProAct’s president David B. Warner.  “Similarly sized counties are seeing savings of about $80,000 per month, while Broome County is consistently seeing $120,000 per month in savings. This tells us that the program is working and is continuously providing financial relief at the pharmacy counter for uninsured residents.”

There are currently 37 participating counties across New York State that have exclusively endorsed the ProAct Prescription Drug Discount Card Program. Participating counties have collectively filled over 1.3 million scripts, amounting to $31 Million in savings.

“With our economy still struggling and no COLA increase again for Social Security, residents having an extra $1.1 million in their pockets could make the difference in their ability to stay in their homes, pay their utility bills or just being able to afford to take all of their medications,” said Suzann Buchta (D-17th district).

“We are all well aware that often time’s public service projects cost counties time and money,” said Joe Sanfilippo, (D-4th district). “This program has enabled Broome County to make an immediate and sizeable impact on the struggles faced by many of our uninsured and underinsured residents, at no cost to us or participants.”

The program offers residents a hassle-free way to save money. There are no enrollment forms to fill out, no membership fees, and no age or income requirements. The prescription discount card can be used at any pharmacy in the area and at over 55,000 pharmacies nationwide. Seniors have found the card especially useful in helping defray some of the costs related to the Medicare prescription “donut hole.”

Prescription Drug Discount Cards are available at many local pharmacies and at various Broom County departments, including: County Clerk’s Office, Health Department and Social Services. Residents with computer access can print a card any time by visiting www.NYRxDiscountCard.com.

ProAct, Inc. is a Pharmacy Benefit Management Company based in Central New York and a division of Kinney Drugs.
