Broome marks $500,000 in prescription savings through ProAct
A discount prescription drug program sponsored by Broome County Government in the fall of 2009 has enabled Broome County residents to fill over 19,400 discounted prescriptions for a total savings of over $500,000.
Broome County partnered with ProAct to offer residents a way to afford a range of health benefits including prescription drugs, vision, hearing and LASIK benefits. ProAct card holders who don’t have health insurance or who have inadequate coverage can receive lower cost drugs and services from participating providers. There are currently 30 counties participating in the program statewide with a total savings of $22.6 million to date.
Broome County residents have seen even more savings then reported as the value of the savings related to the expanded vision, hearing and LASIK benefits is not included in the $500,000 figure. “We have seen a significant increase in the number of uses of the card in the past month and as a result, an increase in the monthly savings, said County Legislator Joe Sanfilippo, chair of the legislature’s Human Services Committee. “Our staff and county department heads have done a tremendous job in promoting this program and increasing public awareness of the benefits available which is one of the reasons it has been so successful. I strongly encourage all residents to explore the possible benefits of using this card”.
The program offers residents a hassle-free way to save money. There are no enrollment forms to fill out, no membership fees, and no age or income requirements. The prescription discount card can be used at any pharmacy in the area and at over 55,000 pharmacies nationwide. Seniors have found the card especially useful in helping defray some of the costs related to the Medicare prescription “donut hole”.
Prescription drug discount cards are available at local pharmacies and at many county facilities including the County Clerk’s Office, the Binghamton and Endicott DMV’s, County Public Library, Health Department, Social Services and Workforce New York. Residents can also print their own card from by visiting the County’s homepage, www.gobroomecounty.com and clicking on the ProAct card located near the bottom of the page.
ProAct Inc. is a Pharmacy Benefit Management Company based in Central New York and a division of Kinney Drug.
