Chairman Reynolds forms Ad Hoc Natural Gas Education Committee

Chairman Daniel D. Reynolds (D-Vestal) today announced the formation of the Natural Gas Education Committee (Ad Hoc) which will host presentations and receive updates from various local, state and federal departments and agencies related to natural gas exploration so that committee members and legislators have an opportunity to communicate directly with industry regulators. Consisting of five members including three legislators and two members of the public, the committee will hold informational meetings only and not act on questions of policy or submit recommendations.

“Broome County has tracked the various environmental, legal and political issues associated with gas drilling through the work of the County Executive’s Natural Gas Development Team and the Legislature’s standing committees have received presentations on a wide variety of topics. At this point, we believe that continuing this dialogue and promoting continued education on the issues will be beneficial for legislators and the public,” said Reynolds.

Legislative members of the committee include majority leader Gene LaBare (D-Endicott) who will serve as committee chair; minority leader Jerry Marinich (R-Chenango) and Steve Herz (D-Windsor). Herz chair’s the Legislature’s Transportation and Rural Development Committee which has jurisdiction on all matters pertaining to gas exploration.

The two non-legislative members include former County Legislator Christopher W. Burger who currently serves as chair of the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition and is a member of the Broome County Environmental Management Council and Robert Williams of Barnes-Williams Environmental Services, LLC of Binghamton. Mr. Williams has extensive experience in environmental assessment and impact work as well as permitting and environmental compliance monitoring for energy development company projects.

The committee will hold meetings in the County Office Building as presenters are available. Invited presenters include state and federal elected officials and representatives of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, DEC, County Soil & Water Conservation Districts, County Emergency Services, and the County Health Department among others based on recommendations of the committee.
