Annual Earth Day Green Initiative Recognition Program

In honor of Earth Day, the Broome County Legislature recognizes organizations that have displayed exemplary leadership and innovative practices to improve our environment.  We look for organizations that have instituted creative environmental programs that go above and beyond the mandated regulations.  The proclamations will honor large and small business, non-for-profit orgranizations, and educational institutions.  Eligible organizations are assessed by a pollution prevention general survey that addresses waste management, pollution reduction, energy efficiency and the use of safer chemicals.

Community members are cordially invited to facilitate our recognition program by nominating up to three organizations of their choice.  Nominations are accepted between mid-March and mid-April each year.

To nominate:
Send an email to: Jroyer@co.broome.ny.us

Include:

1. Company Name
2. Company Address
3. Company Phone Number
4. Summary of Company’s Green Initiative

The Green Initiative Recognition Program was implemented as part of a series of recognition efforts, which began in 2008, to encourage organizations in our community to create a healthier more conscientious environment in Broome County. This program seeks to provide recognition to organizations who implement environmentally friendly methods and practices. The Green Initiative Recognition Program was warmly accepted by organizations who were all very excited about being recipients of this new award.

In 2008, 22 organizations were recognized by the Green Initiative Recognition Program.  In 2009, 16 organizations received an award.  The program is also a great learning experience for Legislative Interns, who assist in the implementation of this program.

The Broome County Legislature has decided to turn this recognition into an annual event.  The Annual Broome County Green Initiative Recognition will be publicized by the Chairman of the Legislature in mid-March and the awards will be presented at the April session each year.
