Proposed Local Tax Exemption Moves Forward

Proposed Local Tax Exemption Moves Forward
A proposed local law to establish a partial tax exemption for homeowners has passed the County Administration, Economic Development & Planning and Finance Committees of the Broome County Legislature. The local law will now be considered by the full legislature at the next regular session on Thursday, April 22nd beginning at 5.00pm.
The local law is sponsored by Broome County Legislator Jason Garnar (D-3rd District) who also chairs the legislature’s Economic Development & Planning Committee. “I have received overwhelming support for this proposal from homeowners and the business community since I first introduced it earlier this month. I hope the rest of my colleagues will consider supporting this measure so that we can bring some much needed tax relief to residents while increasing sales at local home improvement stores and creating jobs for contractors,” said Garnar.
Improvement may range from a minimum of $3,000 to a maximum of $80,000 to qualify for the exemption which would phase in their increased property assessment over an 8 year period, saving homeowners potentially thousands of dollars in property taxes. The exemption covers county taxes only. Other municipalities including school districts may pass a similar law for their property tax assessments by the end of the year to coincide with the county’s. The Town of Union has a similar exemption in place currently. Homeowners would apply for this exemption at their local assessor’s office and would need to submit supporting documentation such as a building permit and receipted bills.
