Volunteers Needed For Riverbank Clean-Up Saturday, October 6

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) invites groups of stream captains, their crews, and community members to be stewards of their local waterways by registering to take part in the 22ND ANNUAL BROOME COUNTY RIVERBANK CLEAN UP. The event is SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2007, light rain or shine from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at various locations along the Susquehanna, Chenango and Tioughnioga rivers and tributaries in Broome County. A rain date is Saturday, October 13. Pre-registration is required.

Last year, nearly 260 volunteers among 28 groups retrieved over 2.6 tons of garbage, illegally dumped trash, and flood carried debris at 21 locations along Broome waterways. The Broome County EMC is a registered participant in the International River and Coastal Clean Up sponsored in New York State by the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society and internationally by the Ocean Conservancy. The Clean-up fosters a call to action for environmental groups and individuals, and is a focal point for clean water issues and initiatives to engage citizens in local water conservation efforts.
