World AIDS Day Events in Tioga County

OWEGO, NY - World AIDS Day will be observed on Thursday, November 29, 2007, at the Owego United Methodist Church, Main St., Owego. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the epidemic.

The Tioga County Health Department will be providing free, rapid HIV testing from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the church. Project WAVE NY will provide incentives for people who are tested for HIV. A short program to observe World AIDS Day will be held prior to the start of the ACT Meal at 6 p.m. at the church.

This is a collaborative project of the Binghamton Tri-County HIV Care Network, Project WAVE NY, and Tioga County Health Department.

It is estimated that 38.6 million people worldwide are living with HIV as of December 2005 and more that 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981 when HIV/AIDS was first discovered. In the U.S., it is estimated that there are over 1 million people living with HIV and approximately 40,000 new infections diagnosed each year.
