KYDS Coalition to hold Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking

The KYDS Coalition will be joining hundreds of communities nationwide that are holding Town Hall Meetings to discuss and raise awareness about underage drinking. Underage drinking is not a minor problem. The Prevention Needs Assessment survey administered by the KYDS Coalition in 2006 revealed on average, Broome County kids are having their first drink at age 13. Moreover, by graduation 80% of our youth have used alcohol. The survey also revealed that 1/3 of our youth have used alcohol in the past 30 days and 15% reported they've gone to school drunk or high.

In collaboration with area schools, the KYDS Coalition will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Teen Center of the Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome (One Clubhouse Road, Endicott). We will have a panel of speakers including a youth in recovery, a parent of a youth in recovery, a law enforcement officer, prevention specialists and a student from Binghamton University. Panel members will tell their stories, take audience questions and lead a community discussion to find solutions to curbing underage drinking.

The KYDS Coalition encourages parents and other community members to attend and engage in the discussion. Helpful tips will be offered to identify a role all can take part in to reduce underage drinking in our area.
