National HIV Testing Day

BINGHAMTON, NY - In observation of National HIV Testing Day, the Broome County Health Department will be offering rapid, anonymous HIV testing at the Southern Tier AIDS Program, 122 Baldwin Street, Johnson City, NY, on Monday, June 26, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Incentives will be provided by the Southern Tier AIDS Program for those who get tested.

The goal of the 12th annual National HIV Testing Day Campaign is to educate the public about HIV counseling and testing, and to encourage people to learn their HIV status by getting a HIV test. Testing can be done anonymously (you don’t have to give your name) or confidentially (you give your name but it is not shared with anyone without a signed consent). People at highest risk for HIV include intravenous drug users, men who have sex with men, and those who have had unprotected sex or shared needles. New treatments are helping those living with HIV to enjoy longer lives. To receive those treatments, however, individuals must first know whether they are infected with HIV.

In the Binghamton HIV Care Network region (Broome, Chenango and Tioga County), 11 individuals were diagnosed with HIV in 2004 and 19 individuals were diagnosed with AIDS in 2004. This brings the total number of individuals living with HIV to 150, the total number of individuals living with AIDS to 176, and the total number of individuals who have ever been diagnosed with AIDS to 348 in the Binghamton region (excluding prisoners). According to the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS Epidemiology there have been a total 166,537 cumulative AIDS cases diagnosed in New York State since record keeping began.
