County, City Officials Present Drug and Gang Violence Prevention Seminar

Binghamton, NY – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston and Binghamton Mayor Rich David, along with local law enforcement, are proud to welcome Steve Nawojczyk for a presentation on youth involvement in drugs, gangs and the resulting violence.

The two-day seminar at the Forum Theatre offers government officials and employees, members of local law enforcement, community organizations and members of our community an opportunity to educate themselves about the reality of the situation concerning drugs and gangs in youth culture not only here, but all throughout the country.

“I’m not proud to admit that we have a gang problem and a drug problem in our community,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “We hear about it every day on the news.  We’ve started to fight the drug issue through our Broome Opioid Abuse Council, but more work needs to be done.  We hope Steve’s presentation will provide tips not only to the government, but also the community on how we can start fighting back against these very real and dangerous issues.”

“Gang activity ruins families and destroys the lives of our youth,” said Mayor David. “The City of Binghamton is committed to fighting gang activity, promoting prevention and combating the drugs and violence that gangs promote. Adding police to streets is only one part of our approach — we’re also working with nationally recognized experts to provide our law enforcement officers new tools and information about the gang and drug culture affecting the youth in our community.”

Steve Nawojczyk is an acclaimed educator in juvenile violence and gangs and how communities can handle them. He is one of the Country’s most sought after experts in this field.

Nawojczyk is currently the Program Administrator in the Community Services Section of the Arkansas State Division of Youth Services as well as a strong community organizer.

His work with gangs has been seen in the HBO America Undercover documentary “Gang War: Bangin’ on Little Rock,” as well as his producing of the follow-up HBO documentary “Back in the Hood.”

“This seminar will be extremely educational and useful for those in all walks of life in our community,” Preston went on. “Our hope is that if we implement some of Steve’s suggestions and we work together, we can help clean up our gang and drug problem and hopefully, over time, eliminate them completely.”

Nawojczyk will host a presentation on Tuesday, July 21st from 5:30 – 7:30 at the Forum Theatre that is free and open to the public.

Everyone is encouraged to attend.
