STOP-DWI Program to Coordinate Thanksgiving DWI Crackdown

Checkpoints and patrols run November 25 – November 29, 2015

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County STOP-DWI Program today announced that law enforcement agencies across Broome County will deploy special DWI enforcement patrols to help ensure that our roadways will be safe during the Thanksgiving holiday.

“The night before Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest party nights of the year, on par with St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Eve. While we encourage people to enjoy their pre-Thanksgiving activities responsibly, it’s important that they use a sober driver to get to and from their destination if they plan on consuming alcohol,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.

Don’t just make Thanksgiving party plans—make a plan to stay alive.

  • If you plan on drinking this Thanksgiving make arrangements now for how you’ll get home by downloading the free STOP-DWI Have A Plan mobile app at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp
  • Take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation. Driving impaired is never the solution
  • Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911 when it’s safe to do so
  • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going

The STOP-DWI crackdowns are comprised of several periods organized by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
