Visit the Susquehanna Heritage Area and discover our stories, experience our culture, and celebrate our heritage on Heritage Weekend, Saturday, May 14, 2011. 

The Broome County Department of Planning and Economic Development, on behalf of the Susquehanna Heritage Area, wishes to announce the celebration of the New York State Heritage Weekend at 31 sites representing the historical, cultural, recreational, natural, and agri-tourism resources in Broome County and Tioga County on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  

New York Heritage Weekend will showcase the EmpireState to residents and visitors and kick off the summer tourism season in style!  The celebration will highlight special events at heritage and cultural destinations throughout New YorkState

The Susquehanna Heritage Area is one of 20 Heritage Areas in New YorkState, each working to develop, preserve and promote the historic, cultural and natural resources that create its identity.  The New York State Heritage Area Program was created by state legislation in 1982 with the goal of advancing preservation, recreation, interpretation, and economic development.

The goal of the Susquehanna Heritage Area is to use the historic, cultural and natural resources of Broome and TiogaCounties to strengthen regional identity, enhance local quality-of-life, support the local economy and promote stewardship.  This goal is achieved through the partnership and coordinated activities of local and regional organizations with technical support from the NYS Heritage Area Program, such as the NYS Heritage Weekend.

The local sites participating in Heritage Weekend include: Binghamton Visitor Center, Endicott Visitor Center, Roberson Museum and Science Center, Otsiningo Park Farmers’ Market, George W. Johnson Park Carousel, C. Fred Johnson Park Carousel, Highland Park Carousel, West Endicott Park Carousel, Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, The Discovery Center, Preservation Association of the Southern Tier Historic House Tour and Preservation Month Exhibit, TechWorks! Come Fly With Us, Village of Deposit 10th Annual Old Time Folk and Craft Fair, Bundy Arts and Victorian Museum, Phelps Mansion Museum Tours, JKLS Environmental Photography Show, Little Italy – Endicott Heritage Museum, Amos Patterson Museum, Old Village of Union Historical Society, Historic NBT Bank Tour, Old Hawleyton Church Museum, Kirkwood Historical Society Schoolhouse Museum, Nanticoke Valley Historical Society Museum, J. Ralph Ingalls School, School House Number 5, Pitchers Mill, Vestal Museum and Vestal Historical Society, Tioga County Historical Museum, Susquehanna River Archaeological Center, and Bement-Billings Farmstead.

NYS Heritage Weekend will begin in the Susquehanna Heritage Area at 9:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 14, 2011.  Many of the participating sites are posted on www.heritageweekend.org  or to view the site map, locations, descriptions, and times please click the link below.
