Kraham Commends County Residents for Recycling Record

BINGHAMTON, NY -- This morning Broome County Executive Jeffrey P. Kraham released the latest recycling statistics showing that the county's recycling rate stands at an all-time high of 64.4%. This rate reflects all of the waste recovered for recycling and composting.

"I commend the citizens of Broome County," said Mr. Kraham, "This outstanding rate demonstrates how the synergy of active public participation and smart government programs can make something very good happen. Recycling not only conserves natural resources, but it saves landfill space, and that translates to real dollars."

For the tenth year in a row, Broome County has increased the amount of materials recycled and composted, and decreased the amount of waste landfilled. Broome County's program is among the highest in the state and nation.

Mr. Kraham also announced that Broome County will give away free compost to residents. Broome County residents can fill two standard garbage cans or 60-gallon equivalents of clean compost for home landscaping. Compost is a rich, earthy mixture, a highly valued product made from the leaf and yard waste composting operation at the landfill. The Nanticoke Landfill is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and weekdays from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and is located on Knapp Road, off Airport Road, in the Town of Maine.
