2002 Joyce Smith Environmental Photography Show On Display At The Broome County Public Library

BINGHAMTON, NY - Winning and honorable mention photographs from the Broome County Environmental Management Council's (EMC) 2002 Joyce Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition, will be displayed at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, in downtown Binghamton, during July and August. The public is invited to attend an opening reception in the second floor gallery of the Broome County Public Library, Wednesday, July 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Elevators are available and accessible.

Entrants to the Joyce Smith Environmental Photography Show submitted photographs for competition in the following five categories: Wildlife; Plantlife; Natural Landscape; Cultural Landscape; and People in Action. The EMC received submissions from 49 amateur photographers and were delighted with the quality and variety of entries. A local panel of professional photographers and environmental veterans considered 150 photographs. The winners in each category can be seen at www.gobroomecounty.com.

In addition to the Environmental Management Council, the show and competition are sponsored by the Broome County Public Library (Binghamton), The Garland Gallery (Binghamton), Slideways Graphics (Kirkwood), and Silver Image Photographics (Vestal). Contest sponsors furnished prizes.

The purpose of the event is to celebrate Broome County's environment and the work of the EMC to protect and enhance it. The show and competition was renamed in 2000 in memory of Joyce Smith, a local leader and activist for the environment who died in 1999. Mrs. Smith, who was a long-time member of the EMC, conceived the idea to have an environmental photography competition and helped plan the first event in 1996. A memorial fund established by her family to further environmental education is being used to underwrite the contest. Contributions to the Joyce Smith Memorial Fund are welcome and appreciated.
