"I have to fly... I can't walk!"
BINGHAMTON, NY - This is the jovial response from Dan Buchanan, one of the many notable participants at this year's Greater Binghamton Air Show, when asked why he is an aerial performer and an inspiration to us all. What does he fly? A smooth, silent, tow launched hang-glider that allows Dan to showcase his incredible talents as an aerobatic performer.
In 1981 Buchanan was left a paraplegic through a series of sport related accidents. Not letting this slow him down, Dan has since clocked in over 2,400 hours of glider time. Not only does his handicap not keep him on the ground, but Dan also enjoys scuba diving, cycling, sailing, snow skiing, and exploring the Sierra Nevada's on an ATV.
Dan provides both entertainment and inspiration to the crowds below who watch his unique performance. Buchanan communicates with his audience through flight, and he speaks to them through a live radio link, which is broadcast to fans throughout the entire performance. His routine includes a launch from a custom built ground pad with a lift-off speed of 30 mph, climbing to an altitude of 1,500 feet above ground where he performs wheels, circles and dives to music. His graceful descent includes smoke, streamers and dazzling pyrotechnics.
Dan Buchanan will be performing at the Greater Binghamton Air Show 2004, this Saturday and Sunday, July 10th and 11th along with many other top performers.
