Environmental Management Council Seeks New Members

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is accepting applications for membership. Interested individuals are invited to learn more about this opportunity at the EMC's September general meeting on Thursday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Decker Community Room of the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street in downtown Binghamton.

The EMC is Broome County government's citizen volunteer advisory group on local environmental matters. The EMC is the focal point for public participation in local government decisions that affect the County's environment. Broome County's EMC is one of 24 such councils in New York State. No special expertise is required to join, only a willingness and ability to attend and participate in meetings and other Council activities.

Applications for Members-at-Large positions, which are voting positions, will be accepted through October 19. Four Member-at-Large seats are currently vacant, and two more will be available beginning in 2002. The EMC's Membership Committee recommends candidates to the County Executive, who makes the appointments subject to confirmation by the Legislature. Appointees serve two-year terms.

The Council is also accepting applications for Associate Membership, which are non-voting positions. Those applications may be submitted at any time during the year.

For the last 30 years, the volunteer members have conducted meetings and public information sessions, and prepared and presented reports, plans and advisory resolutions. EMC's areas of interest include natural resource management, water resource protection, land use planning, sustainable development, and recycling and waste management. In addition, the EMC organizes annual hands-on events such as the Riverbank Clean Up and Book Recycling Fair, and the Joyce Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition.

For more information about the EMC, visit Broome County's website www.gobroomecounty.com, or call 607.778.2116, during business hours, Monday through Friday.
