Ribbon Cutting Welcomes New Welcome Sign

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala was joined by Greater Binghamton Chamber and local Empire State Games Representatives for the official ribbon cutting for the “Welcome to Greater Binghamton” sign just outside the Greater Binghamton Airport. The recently constructed sign welcomes airport travelers to the Greater Binghamton Region as well as promotes upcoming events in the community.

The money for the sign was donated by the local organizing committee of the Empire State Games. The Greater Binghamton Region hosted the games in 2000 and 2004. The beautification committee of the 2004 Empire State Games raised the funds for the sign. The group wanted to create an attractive and welcoming sign for visitors.

“It is an extension of the efforts taking place at the Greater Binghamton Airport,” said Executive Fiala. “We want to make the best first impression we can and I think this sign simply adds to the welcoming environment already established by our Greater Binghamton Airport.”

“We had more than 6,000 athletes and 10,000 visitors come to our community during the most recent Empire State Games,” said James Orband, Chairman of the local Empire State Games Organizing Committee. “We wanted to leave a legacy for this community and we wanted to provide a new sign for the community to welcome new visitors in a way that would leave them with a positive first impression of our community.”

Greater Binghamton Chamber representatives indicate that our community is working to host the Empire State Games once again in the future.
