West Nile Virus Update

BINGHAMTON, NY - The New York State Department of Health reported 2 additional cases of West Nile Virus in Broome County residents. What follows is a synopsis of each case:

Case 1.    Probable, not confirmed as of yet; 46-year-old female; Onset of symptoms: September 23, 2002; Patient experienced headache and fever; Patient was seen in the Emergency Department and not hospitalized; Patient is recovering at home.

Case 2.    Confirmed; 48-year-old male; Onset of symptoms: September 21, 2002; Patient experienced some muscle weakness and slurred speech; Patient has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The Broome County Health Department will review all aspects of the surveillance information and develop surveillance, education and control plans for the 2003 season.

Residents are reminded to clean up any standing water around their homes and businesses. If spending long periods of time outdoors between dusk and dawn use personal protective measures to avoid exposure to mosquitoes.

The mosquito season should be ending in another two weeks or so.
