Fourth Annual Youth Banner Contest
BINGHAMTON, NY - The local theme chosen for World AIDS Day 2001 is "I Care, You Can Too". The Community Awareness Committee of the HIV Care Network, a regional coalition of health and human service providers, community leaders, volunteers, and consumers in the Broome, Chenango and Tioga County area, is coordinating local events for World AIDS Day. This year's events will build upon the successful involvement of over 100 area youth in 2000 World AIDS Day events in Binghamton. With community support, the Network plans to increase the level of participation, and a fourth annual Youth Banner Contest will be held to support youth involvement in AIDS education projects throughout the region.
The number of individuals with HIV infection and AIDS in the region continues to rise. With adult guidance and encouragement, young people can be empowered to change the course of this epidemic by advocating for prevention, education and awareness, and by becoming involved in peer education. Banners will be carried during a silent march in downtown Binghamton on Saturday, December 1st. Awards will be given to the groups with the most creative banners. More details will be made available in the coming weeks.
This year's theme, "I Care, You Can Too", should be incorporated into creating banners for World AIDS Day. HIV prevention, AIDS education, increased awareness, reducing stigma, hope for a cure, or compassion and sensitivity toward individuals and families impacted by the disease are some of the many possible themes youth may choose for their banners. The banner contest is open to any interested individual, group, or organization in Broome, Chenango or Tioga County. Adolescents and college students are especially encouraged to participate.
