Comfort And Safety Reach New Level At Greater Binghamton Airport

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive, Jeffrey P. Kraham is pleased to announce that the construction phase of the Passenger Boarding Bridge Installation Project at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) will begin Thursday, October 23rd. To kick-off this important development at the airport, the County Executive and State Senator Thomas W. Libous will hold a press conference and design unveiling at the Greater Binghamton Airport in the passenger departure lounge on Thursday, October 23rd at noon.

This new project consists of the installation of four (4) new state-of-the-art passenger boarding bridges, which will provide both local and visiting travelers with a high level of safety, comfort and convenience. Available to each of the airlines offering service at BGM, these enclosed bridges will offer passengers 100% protection from the weather each time they board or disembark from their airplane.

"We are extremely pleased to offer this large airport amenity to the travelers of our region while still maintaining our small facility convenience," said Mr. Kraham. "Additionally, as we are purchasing four new bridges, each of the four airlines serving our airport will have the opportunity to offer this service to their customers even during those times when they are all boarding flights simultaneously," added Kraham. The boarding bridges have the capability of handling all types of aircraft including large jets.

Total project costs are expected to total 2.1 million dollars, 56% funded by federal grants, 17% airport enterprise funds and 27% New York State money which includes a grant secured by New York State Senator Thomas W. Libous. The installation will be completed in two separate phases to minimize the effects on travelers during construction. The bridges are expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2004.

Media representatives are asked to meet in the area of the security screening checkpoint at 11:45 a.m. where they will be escorted to the passenger departure lounge.
