Executive Fiala Pushes for Additional Conservation Measures

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala is ordering all Broome County Office Building thermometers to be set at 68 degrees this winter. The previous thermometer setting was 72 degrees. The order also includes all of the rented county office space, when possible. Broome County Sheriff David Harder says the Public Safety Building will also comply. The County Executive says this is going to be a tough winter for energy related expenses and the county needs to do all it can to conserve.

Energy costs have skyrocketed and there appears to be no indication that costs will stabilize or decrease in the near future, said Executive Fiala. We need to do what we can and I believe lowering the temperature a few degrees will have a positive impact on our costs but should not adversely impact our employees.

Broome County employees are being encouraged to dress in layers and wear warm footwear. It is also being suggested that they keep an extra office sweater handy in case it gets too cool.

Broome County already implements summer hours to try to conserve energy and reduce air conditioning costs in the summertime. The County does not know how much this latest conservation effort will save the county but if it ends up saving even a little bit, it will be repeated in years to come.
