Youth Awareness Initiative to Focus on AIDS Stigma and Discrimination

BINGHAMTON, NY - World Aids Day is December 1, 2003. This years theme "Live and Let Live" continues to focus on the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease and encourages people to reflect on how they respond to those living with HIV and AIDS. The Community Awareness Committee of the HIV Care Network invites young people, youth groups, and organizations serving young people to participate in a Youth Awareness Initiative. Youth who take part in the Initiative will create a banner or poster focusing on the theme of reducing the stigma and discrimination that shadow AIDS victims.

The banners and posters will be carried in two silent candlelight marches that will occur simultaneously in Broome and Chenango counties in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to this disease. The marches will take place on World AIDS Day, Monday, December 1, 2003, at 6:00 p.m. The Broome County march will begin at the County Courthouse in downtown Binghamton and proceed to Trinity Memorial Church, 44 Main Street, Binghamton, NY, following a brief program at the Courthouse. In Chenango County, the march will start from the lobby of the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich and process to the gazebo in the park by the Courthouse where a short program will be held prior to continuing on to the United Church of Christ First Congregational, 11 West Main Street, Norwich, NY, for a panel presentation and refreshments.
