Executive Fiala Urges Neighbors to Help Neighbors this Winter
BINGHAMTON, NY - With the first snowfall of winter approaching, it is time to look around your neighborhood for elderly and disabled individuals who may need your help to deal with winter’s snow and ice.
“People get so busy in their daily lives that they may not notice the elderly man or woman down the street who might need a little help,” said Executive Fiala. “Winters can be especially tough so we’d just like to see neighbors taking a little time out of their busy schedules to ask older individuals if they need help. One moment of your time can make the world of difference in that person’s life.”
Snow and ice can trap senior citizens and the disabled in their homes and prevent needed services from being delivered to them. Many elderly and disabled individuals do not have family or friends who are able to help them clear the pathways to their home. Can you take a few minutes to offer to clear their porch, steps and sidewalk to keep pathways open and safe for them and their service providers?
If you have a snow blower, can you clear their driveway, especially after the snowplow has been through? Do they have salt or sand for ice that you could spread for them? Do they need help with groceries or other shopping if the weather is bad or severely cold? Perhaps you can pick up some things for them when you shop.
Please check on your neighbors and help make this winter season a safer time for those who might need some help. If any older resident feels they might need a little help, they can contact the Senior Resource Line of the Office for Aging at 607.778.2411.
