New York State STOP-DWI Association, Inc. to mark 25th Anniversary of New York State's STOP-DWI Program

BINGHAMTON, NY - The New York State STOP-DWI Association will host a ceremony in Albany, New York on November 13, 2006 to mark the 25th Anniversary of New York State’s STOP-DWI Program. County, state and federal officials will join STOP-DWI Coordinators from across New York to recognize the 25th Anniversary of The Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated – “STOP-DWI”.

“STOP-DWI across the state has been extremely effective in getting the message out and I’m particularly pleased that Broome County’s STOP-DWI Program is at the forefront in creating innovative ways to reach people of all ages, especially our young people,” said Barbara J. Fiala, Broome County Executive. “Jim May and his staff are a dedicated group who take their mission seriously and carry out that mission at the highest level of professionalism.”

In 1981, New York State established itself as a national leader in the prevention of drunk driving by enacting this landmark program. STOP-DWI is the nation’s only self-sufficient traffic safety program – as it is funded entirely by the fines paid by people convicted of DWI and DWI related offenses. The STOP-DWI Program also provides for local decision making – enabling each county in New York to set its own priorities in the effort to combat drunk driving.

As a result of this innovative program, New York State has been highly successful in reducing alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes. Hundreds of lives have been saved and thousands of people have been spared serious injury.

During the 1980’s, an average of 801 people were killed and 16,722 people injured each year due to drunk driving in New York State. In the 1990’s these totals were reduced to an average of 458 people killed and 11,774 people injured. In 2005, 382 people were killed and 7,724 injured in alcohol related crashes on New York’s roadways.

The 25th Anniversary ceremony and reception will be held on November 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, New York.
