What is The Health of Your Private Water Supply?
BINGHAMTON, NY - As winter approaches, residents living on property with private wells should consider doing a check on the condition of their water supply. This is especially important if a change in odor, taste or color is noted or if the well was overtopped by flood waters. There are specific steps that can be taken to identify the problem along with measures to address the problem. These include conducting a sanitary survey by looking for sources of pollution around your well, such as standing surface water or a failed septic system; proper well disinfection by shocking your well with liquid chlorine bleach; and having a water sample checked by a certified laboratory for bacteria in your well.
Broome County residents can contact the Broome County Health Department, Division of Environmental Health Services at 607.778.2847 for assistance.
