County Environmental Advisory Board Seeks New Members

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is accepting membership applications for membership through January 2003 to fill five vacancies. Interested individuals are invited to attend any of the EMC's regularly scheduled full Council meetings, generally held on the first Thursday of each month. Interested persons are also encouraged to attend any one of the EMC's working committees, which meet monthly. A calendar of meetings is posted on the EMC's page of the Broome County website: www.gobroomecounty.com/planning/PlanningEMC.php.

The EMC is Broome County government's citizen volunteer advisory group on local environmental matters. The EMC is the focal point for public participation in local government decisions that affect the County's environment. No special expertise is required to join, except a strong willingness and commitment to participate.

Four individuals are sought to fill vacant Member-at-Large seats on an interim basis for one year, through December 31, 2003. These voting positions are subject to County Executive confirmation and Legislative approval. Appointed candidates will be eligible for a full two-year term once their interim term expires.

There is also one Member-at-Large full term (2-year) seat available, which will expire December 31, 2004.

The EMC is also accepting any number of applications for Associate Membership year-round. These members contribute to Council discussions but are unable to vote. These applications will be accepted year-round. Associate Members are eligible for vacant Member-at-Large seats once they have demonstrated a commitment to the work of the EMC.

For the last 31 years, the EMC volunteer members have conducted meetings and public information sessions, and prepared and presented reports, plans and advisory resolutions on a variety of issues affecting our local environment. The EMC's areas of interest include natural resource management, protection, and conservation; sustainable planning and development, including brownfields redevelopment; and recycling and waste management. In addition, the EMC organizes and recruits volunteers for the annual Riverbank Clean Up and other public events.
