HIV/AIDS Planning Coalition Receives State Award

BINGHAMTON, NY - The HIV Care Network, a regional planning coalition for services to HIV positive individuals and their families, was presented with a first-place Materials Development Award in October from the Statewide Regional Educator's Committees, for their calendar: "Promoting HIV/AIDS Awareness & Education for Youth in the New Millennium". Nancy McGraw, Network Coordinator and Supervising Public Health Educator at Broome County Health Department, accepted the award on behalf of the HIV Care Network. The Network is composed of health and human service providers and community volunteers.

This project involved the creation of a calendar featuring colorful banners and art work created by area youth groups and schools for World AIDS Day. Messages throughout the calendar promote AIDS education, list facts and dispel myths about HIV transmission, support healthy lifestyle choices and development of positive self-esteem for youth, and include inspirational quotes that promote leadership and peer education. Community resources are also listed.

The Regional Community Educators Committee from the Heart of New York, Syracuse, awarded this project its first place award in April 2001, and submitted it to the Statewide Community Educators Committee. The Statewide Regional Educator's Committee was established in 1991 to assist in addressing regional HIV prevention information and education needs of communities across New York State. The group receives support and oversight from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute.
